I am very important part of the Progressive Era 1896-1916. With my book the Jungle came out 1906 to relive the truth behind chicago’s meat packing plant. My book gave americans a graphic view on what happened to the meat before it had hit the stores. After my book was published president Roosevelt signed a law regulating foods and drugs on June 30, 1906, the same day he signed the Meat Inspection Act. The Pure Food and Drug Act regulated food additives and prohibited misleading labeling of food and drugs. This law led to the formation of the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The Gruesome work that I was these man doing in side the Meat packing plant faced on there everyday shifts. The acid in the pickle room was so strong that all the joints in the man’s fingers would be eaten and the man sore on the man’s hand could put him out of the world. nor the butchers, floorsmen, the beef-boners,trimmers, and all those who used knives, had any use of their Thumbs. The beef-luggers whose job was to carry two-hundred pounds of quarters the refrigerator; theses man estimated to be wore out by a few years because of their instant work and long hours. the beef-luggers would start work at four in the morning until whenever. The wool-pluckers whose hands were pieces even sooner than the hands of the pickle men; The pluckers had to pull out the wool from their bare hands and watch as the acid eat at their fingers until they know longer had the use of their hands. Then there were the people that made the tins for the canned meat’ whose hands were sometimes cut to and each cut represented a chance for blood poisoning.
The meat that was taken out pickle room would be found sour and with a awful smell that could be smelled from miles away. the would rub the meat with soda to take away the smell, and they would sold on free-lunch counters. The ham that was founded spoiled with an odor so bad that no man could stand to bear be in the same room; would be packed in a much stronger pickle which would destroy the smell. although the smell was destroyed the bacteria that had grown was still inside the meat. There would be meat that would fall into the floor which was filled with dirt, sawdust and where the workers had tramped and spit out billion of germs.these meats were then packaged up and sent out for purchase. There was thousands of rats in these facilities and the packers would put out poisoned bread out for the rats, when they did die;the rats, bread, and meat would all go into the hopper together and they packaged out for purchase.
