No Rest for the Weary: Children in the Coal Mines
Work in the coal mines is extremely gruesome. So hard. So dangerous. Imagine sitting hour after hour crouched down picking up slate and other turn downs from the coal as it zips past the washers. From holding this tight position, most of these young boys become deformed and bent like old men. Imagine the coal. So hard. Sharp. Accidents are common such as cuts, broken, or even crushed fingers. The boys are surrounded by clouds of smoke all day, asthma is inevitable.
Once, I tried working with the boys doing the work they did just for about an hour and a half. The work that boys of ten and twelve did for fifty, or sixty cents a day proved impossible for me. Most of them had never seen the inside of a school house. Barely any of them could read. Some of them attended night schools, yeah but after a ten hour shift what really could these poor boys learn?
These little boys were being employed to work how many hours they're little body could take. Conditions such as these were so appalling. These boys lives were disregarded. If one boy died from a work related accident, there bodies would just lie there lifeless until someone came to dispose of the body, while everyone else continued to work.
These our the conditions our sons are working in. Risking their lives for a mere sixty cents a day. Boys as young as ten working ten hours a day, toiling, no days off. Is this really how are future looks? What will become of these boys once their older? With either little to no education, where will these boys fit in society when they're men? Are our boys destined to work in coal mines for the rest of their lives?
